Diatomaceous earth —This natural product is found online and in agricultural stores. It works by dehydrating carpet beetle larvae. It’s dispensed in a similar manner as boric acid but is available in food-grade models for additional safety.

Vinegar —Water and apple cider vinegar can be poured inside of a spray bottle and applied to infested clothing, carpets, and upholstered furniture. If you notice carpet beetles crawling along clothes in your wardrobe, wash these pieces with vinegar and water to kill any remaining eggs and larvae.

Vacuuming and steam cleaning—Using a traditional vacuum to suck up carpet beetles and surrounding larvae can be an effective solution. If you need a bit more power, using a steam cleaner is an effective option that combines heat and suction to kill carpet beetles.

I started in the pest control business doing a walking route in Brooklyn before I had my driver’s license. Even back then, I remember my father saying to me, when the forsythia bloom, the termites swarm on Long Island. Ever since then when driving on the Northern or Southern State Parkways, and seeing the green forsythia turn yellow, I think of my Dad and termite swarms.

They call Long Island the termite Gold Coast; I’m not 100% sure why, but I believe it has to do with sandy soil which is conducive to subterranean termites and that is the species we have on Long Island. Subterranean termites live in the ground and can number up to a million in a colony. There are kings, queens, soldiers, winged swarmer reproducers, and worker termites, and it is the worker termites that are the troublemakers. The termite workers, which feed the entire colony, eat only wood — no meat, no chicken, no veggies, only wood. Guess what our homes are framed with — wood! Yum, yum, free lunch say the worker termites.

Termites cause more damage to homes in the United States than fires and storms combined. I have personally seen worker termites eat away floor joists, causing a kitchen floor to fall into the basement.

When the subterranean termite colony reaches maturity in the ground, winged swarmer reproducers leave the colony in the hundreds to thousands in the Spring and the Fall, sometimes swarming in basements, sometimes outside. These winged swarmers are actually new kings and queens leaving their home (colony) looking to set up new colonies. They are very poor flyers and don’t fly far. When they land, they shed their wings; the females raise their abdomens and emit a pheromone for a guy termite to follow. They dig into the ground to set up shop and start building a new colony. Those that swarm indoors, which is pretty common, head to the light, usually windows, sometimes in the basement, drop their wings, and if they cannot get into the ground, they die. Swarmer termites in the basement and a large amount of wings are signs of a mature colony close by. .

Termite Control on Long Island

When I first started in the business, | remember using chlordane; that was the go to product for controlling termites. We dug trenches around homes against the wall and then filled it with large amounts of chlordane. If there was concrete, we drilled holes about 16 inches apart and filled those with chlordane. Chlordane killed everything and that was a problem. It was a repellent and contact killer and it lasted almost forever. | remember a company actually contaminated a home on Long Island with chlordane and it had to be torn down. The United States Environmental Protection Agency and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation banned its use shortly after that.

The science and chemicals have since evolved significantly. Today most of the latest termiticides/insecticides, like BASF Termidor, are non-repellents and don’t kill insects on contact. Companies apply the non-repellent insecticides around the home, and create a ‘treated zone.’ The insecticide doesn’t kill termites on contact. instead the termites don’t ‘ detect tt and pass through the treated area, picking up a dose of the non-repellent, slow acting insecticide. They then transfer it to their nestmates in the feeding mode. Remember, worker termites eat the wood, digest it and feed their nestmates in the colony, and although they are small, they are large in number and worker termites eat wood 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, The non-repellent is a slow acting insecticide and kills the colony through this process. However, today on Long Island that is not the method most commonly used: the termite baiting systems are king on Long Island.

The two most commonly used are BASF Trelona® Advance Termite Baiting System and the Dow-Agro Sciences Sentricon Baiting System. Both systems are installed below ground, around the entire house. The stations are hollow plastic housing with slits on the sides allowing the foraging termites to enter, prebaited compressed termite bait cartridges placed in the cylinder. In the case of BASF there are two large Trelona® compressed termite bait cartridges combined with a slow-acting insecticide which kills termites, allows transmission of the slow-acting insecticide to the nestmates. In fact, termites find Trelona® ATBS faster than they find the leading competitor stations. The stations are placed around the perimeter of the home approximately every 15 feet, and 3 feet out from the foundation. I have seen a tech with the right equipment, complete the installation in under 45 minutes on a small home.

The experts say there are more rats and mice in Manhattan than people. I remember, not too long ago, standing in the lobby of a 235-unit coop apartment building that we service on 145th street, talking to the doorman, and a rat ran from the sidewalk right into the building. So much for professional courtesy! I asked the doorman how often that happens. His response surprised me. Every time they do construction on the water mains or the sewers, the rodents seem to run wild.

The experts say New York City has been at war with the rodents for a decade and I’m not sure they’re winning.

As my company has a zero tolerance for rodents and insects, I try to make into account the environment in which we live. As I tell the management companies and the homeowner associations which run these buildings or the studio renter in SoHo, we eliminate them and we try to keep them out. In exterminating rodents, we use snap traps, pre-baited glue boards, tracking powder and rodent boxes with third generation rodenticides inside. I prefer First Strike® by Lipha-Tech, which is a one chew fatal for rodents, although they cost a bit more, it does the job well. The rodent boxes are tamper resistant for children and animals, requiring a special key to open them up.

The second part of the solution in apartments in Manhattan is rodent proofing. That is where the technician gets on his hands and knees and seals the holes that rodents squeeze through. We use a product that is specifically designed for that purpose, Stuff-It, and is made of steel mesh. From penthouses to studio apartments, we go under the sink in the kitchen and where pipes go through the wall, they are usually enlarged, we seal it with Stuff-It. We also check behind the stove, under vanities in the bathrooms, and the radiators where the pipes run through the floor to seal those holes as well.
